How do you tell if used iron is good iron?

Was the machine on a PM schedule
What was the attitude of the shop?
Is the lube system working properly?
Is the machine tight (ballscrews, bearings and ways)?
Is the spindle running true, and quiet? How is the spindle lubed?
Is the gearbox working properly - in all ranges?
Are spare parts and tooling available?
Are axis drives maintainable? Are the drive manufacturers still in business?
Do the spindle drives and axis drives have a good maintenance history?
